Designing Visual for a Storybook
My friend was new author and I am a new graphic designer. I used my past freelancing experience and worked with my new client. We both set a deadline, style, page settings, and vision for her story. This is a case study of how I designed her story.
Designing Visual for a Storybook
Client
A self published author needs a book design for her new book; Adventures of Charitee.
Task
I will develop character design and scenery for the storybook.
Thinking Progress
First step was to sketched the protagonist of the story, after about 20 sketches we found our character designs.
Secondly, I wanted to understand the target audience
- Generation Alpha
- Parents
- Female Dominate
- African American Demographic
Interested In:
- Pets Owner
- Comedy
- Family Values
- Fiction
Third, was to build scenery to match what was in the story with elements that would feel the same as the design.
Lastly, we added colors, shading, and final details for book. We discussed font choices that were commercial use
and double checked all the grammar before launching.
Concept
The book format shows a format of landscape paper size. With one or two sentences on the bottom or top of page. With minimalistic design and bright colors.
The book design was a dominate color background with the subject centered. It was illustrated like a sketch and colored in with shadings.
The font choice was to be easily readable and friendly.
Color Theory
Blue – Blue calls to mind feelings of calmness or serenity.
Green – Growth and renewal, being the color of spring and rebirth.
Purple – Wisdom, creativity, royalty.
Conclusion
To conclude, The Adventures of Charitee is a story book about a pet dog daily adventures
with the family. It shows an inside look about a Dogs life and connects with
its readers through relative stories with their pets. It has become a big success for the Author and a community
favorite.
